80s Role-modellin'

So I decided to research a little into fashion, the models, people, and styles of one of my favourite era's. But in particular the people that fully embraced the New Romantic age, the 80's. In terms of style it rejected the austerity and anti-fashion stance of punk. Both sexes dressed in counter-sexual clothing and wore a lot of eyeliner and lipstick. 'Gender Blending' was the nickname given to it, which perfectly ties in with my previous blog post on drag queens, which you can read here.

To start, I chose Grace Jones as she is the ultimate woman. 

She was born in May 1948 and was an actress, singer and model, but her modelling is the bit I've focused on. She is the most striking person I think I've ever seen, and I absolutely adore her. First noticed from her appearance in the Bond movie; A View to a Kill, I have been in awe of her ever since. Although not a technically a true new romantic, her look supports that style, bold make up and grungy dress sense.

My next inspo is David Bowie. Bowie, apart from coming out with some brilliant tracks was basically a shapeshifter. He went from normal looking kid to punk to new romantic to rocker. Obviously his new romantic phase was his most fabulous, when he came out with tracks such as Ashes to Ashes.

Bowie became a fashion inspiration for huge designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen, I've put a few pics in at the end of this post as he featured other people, but the designs are amazing.

Next, Boy George. The man of New Romanticism...He is an English singer-songwriter, who was part of the New-Ro movement, his music is often classified as blue-eyed soul, which is influenced by R&b and Reggae, but not the kind of R&b that Beyonce sings, more Al Green and Aretha Franklin sort of blues. He made the most beautiful man-woman. 

                         

                 

So this is a little of Jean Paul Gaultier's SS 13  'ready to wear' collection based on the 80's, some of the inspirations are really obvious so I'll just let you decided who's who.

                             

                             

My favourite late designer in the world Alexander McQueen also made a Resort range in 2013, which looks like it's based on his previous work with Bowie, androgynous yet fab!
